Punalty Shoot-out: a Hungarian Phrasebook
PP: So Fred. We move on to another meaningless friendly tomorrow night. Coming so soon after the shameful World Cup display, I guess those selected will want to do their absolute Budapest …
FF: Long time no speak Peter, keeping well I hope? Capello has been quoted as saying that he is going to start the friendly with the players that DID appear at the World Cup, before brining on the new players in the second half. To be honest he’s made a real goulhash of the whole selection process if you ask me.
PP: Yes very good thank you me ol’chum. I’ve not really followed who is even in the squad but I was under the impression that he’d be giving the youthful ones the chance … and that it would be a case of Young Huns Go For It. Who is playing?
FF: Well having promised to freshen things up I was disappointed to see that he has still selected Ferenc Lampard, John Terry and Steven Gerard! It seems that once again he plans to count (Dracula) on the old guard for the European Championships!
PP: There was talk of the fans boycotting this match due to the flops in the summer. There’s lots of names dropping out too – Bent, Robinson. Who will be eager to succeed tomorrow, who will be Hungary to impress .. ?
FF: Not sure but hopefully we’ll see somebody from Danubreed step forward and take their chance.
PP: Did you know that Hungary were the first team from overseas to defeat England on her home soil? Ever. In 1953, the year of the Queen’s Coronation they beat us 6-3 at Wembley. Considering the national team began in 1872, that was some home record – 81 years unbeaten at home! They were the best team in the World then, they had some famous stars – but tomorrow’s game will be forgettable in two months, let alone half a century! How many fans do you think will Puskas the boat out to attend?
FF: Well I think they might struggle to make the place look full to be honest. They may have to perform some sort of Mag(yar)ic trick to make it look full.
PP: So on to predictions. I take us to win by a Magnificent margin of 4-1.
FF: 2-1, no pun.
