Men Against Boys Second Leg
It is a much over-used phrase for The Spurs in recent years of matches being hyped as Must-Win games or of them being touted as The Biggest Match In Years.
Never before though has this one had such relevance to both of the descriptions above. We go into the home leg with the Young Boys from Berne with renewed confidence. After less than half-an-hour gone of the opening leg on a plastic pitch, it was a real fear that all we had worked for and achieved in the whole of last season was going to be spectacularly thrown away, giving the meaning to tonight’s match as one of where only a miracle would be needed.
No need for such desperate hopes. We just need to win. And we have to be honest, if we can’t win at home against the weakest club side, from the weakest nation, from a play-off round draw in which we were very lucky, avoiding as we did much bigger guns, then perhaps we won’t deserve to make the new Holy Grail of the Group Stage.
It won’t be easy says Harry. They are well-organised and will get men behind the ball. After all, their famous win in Turkey at Fenerbahce was achieved after a 2-2 home draw in the first leg. It could be another frustrating home match to inferior opposition – shades of Hull, Wolves and Stoke at WHL in the league from last season – whereby we battered them but could not break through against an inspired goal-keeping display.
It’s only 8am and I’m nervous already. Twelve hours to go and the tension is building. A win would mean so much and we could then start getting excited about the GS draw tomorrow.
We really do need Men against Young Boys tonight. The players, fans, management – not even mentioning the owners – all know how important it is. They’ll not fail us for want of trying. Come On You Spurs!
